The Board meets the fourth Monday of every month at 12:30 p.m. in the meeting room. Meetings are open to the public.

The Crystal Falls Library is open for specific and designated uses, including reading, studying, writing, participating in scheduled library programs, and using library materials.  In order to provide resources and services to all people who visit the Crystal Falls Library facilities in an atmosphere of courtesy, respect, and excellent service, the Library Board of Trustees has adopted a Patron Behavior Policy.  The purpose of the Library Patron Behavior Policy is to assist the Crystal Falls Library in fulfilling its mission as a community resource enriching life, stimulating intellectual curiosity, fostering literacy, and encouraging an informed citizenry.

Library History In accordance with Michigan's District Library Establishment Act, effective May 22, 1989, this library was reestablished as a district library. The library operates by appropriations and millage from the city of Crystal Falls, Crystal Falls Township, Mansfield Township, penal fines, state aid, grants, donations, and non-resident fees from residents not living in our legal district.

Use of Meeting Room

The Crystal Falls District Community Library is a public institution whose facilities are available to all.  The intent of this policy is to encourage the use of the space to the public for club activities as well as educational or informational community meetings and programs.  The meetings must be open to the public and are limited to non-profit organizations and groups.  The meetings will be free of charge.

First Priority:  The library reserves the right to revoke permission to use the meeting room if the room is needed for library purposes.  The room is reserved for the library board the fourth Monday of each month at 12:30 p.m. CST.

Second Priority: Meetings of an educational, cultural, civic or professional nature are encouraged.

Third Priority:  The meeting room will not be available for commercial purposes, fund-raising or sale of items.  Exceptions will be:

  1. Programs or sales conducted by the library and/or non-profit Library Friends groups, the proceeds of which will go to the direct benefit of the library.

  2. Sale of material directly related to library sponsored programs which has had prior approval of the trustees.

Reservations may be made by telephone.  Reservations for the room should be made twenty-four hours prior to the meeting.

The library does not permit smoking.  Serving of refreshments in the library will be at the discretion of the director.

All individuals/groups are responsible for leaving the meeting room in the same condition as when they arrived.  Reservations can be made by calling the library and reserving the space with library staff.  If a group or organization is refused use of the meeting room they may appear before the board at a regular monthly meeting to express their reasons for why they should be allowed to use the space.

Liability:  Granting permission for the use of the meeting room does not imply endorsement by the library board of the user of the user's belief.  All groups will agree to hold the library harmless from any loss, damage, liability, costs and/or expense that may arise during or to be caused in any way by such use of library facilities.

How to obtain a library card

The Crystal Falls District Community Library serves all residents within the City of Crystal Falls and the Townships of Crystal Falls and Mansfield.  To borrow from the library a user will be required to prove residency or property ownership.  Individuals living outside the district who can show a current paid tax bill (within the district) to the library staff may also checkout materials.   Any person living outside of our library's legally established service area that provides financial support to the library in the form of non-resident fees is entitled to a MILibrary Card providing these fees are paid annually.

Definition of non-resident:  Any individual who does not own property in the City of Crystal Falls, Crystal Falls Township, or Mansfield Township.

Fees for non-resident:  All patrons who do not pay property taxes to the Crystal Falls District Community Library or who do not possess a MILibrary Card will be charged a non-resident fee.  The fee is $30.00 for single or $45.00 for a family per year and $10.00 for a 3 month single membership. Forest Park students who are non-residents may pay an annual fee of $10.00/card.  Fee is for the use of written material only and the card will be marked "Restricted: reading material only" to prevent additional materials from being checked out.  Library staff is to have the parents/guardians sign all the usual paperwork any new card holder must sign.

Interlibrary Loan

The Interlibrary Loan service assists the Crystal Falls District Community Library cardholder in obtaining library materials which are not in our collection. There is a $2 charge for this service. If the lending library charges an additional fee, this cost will be passed on to the borrower.   The loan service is on written material only and does not include : Books on CD, Music CD, Audios or DVD's.

Kill-A-Watt Meter

A Kill-A-Watt meter is a useful tool to measure how much electricity individual appliances use.  This can help identify the energy pigs in your home-those appliances that are secretly consuming more than their fair share.  The meters can reveal exactly how much electricity that refrigerator is using or how much electricity your television uses when it is not even turned on. Solutions to taming these energy pigs can range from applying a new seal to a refrigerator door, putting stereo or computer equipment on a power strip (so they don't draw power while not in use) or switching to Energy Star light bulbs. The Kill-A-Watt meter is available for check-out from the library for a 2 week period.
